Nocturnal enuresis, or bedwetting as it is commonly known as, is a primary type of urinary incontinence occurring in children aged five and above. Nocturnal Enuresis is the intermittent, involuntary voiding during sleep which affects around 15-20% of 5 year olds and 2% of adult children with a high rate of remission.

Nocturnal Enuresis/bedwetting can occur under a number of different circumstances or due to different reasons. The exact cause of nocturnal enuresis is unknown however there are a number of suggested causes. Ordinarily, you produce less urine when you sleep however, some people produce larger amounts of urine during the night. Other suggested causes include; an overactive bladder or a smaller than average bladder, stress or anxiety, certain types of medication, fluid intake before bed or a urinary tract infection. It can occur after a particularly stressful situation or as a result of a medical condition.

Most children outgrow nocturnal enuresis/bedwetting, however there is a small number who continue to wet the bed throughout adolescence and adulthood, and this becomes known persistent primary nocturnal enuresis.

Lower Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

The goal of Lower Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is to improve signalling of a branch of the body’s nervous system, referred as the autonomic nervous system which is responsible for the control of the bodily functions not consciously directed, in this case the body’s bladder capacity. Furthermore, it reduces uncontrolled bladder contractions and reduce the amount of urine excreted during the night. Improved signalling may lead to greater awareness of bladder fullness and therefore, increasing subsequent visits to the toilet.
